Singapore Raises Retirement Age Again: 64 and Counting, How Friendly Is It for Older Job Seekers
Singapore is raising its retirement age in stages. Under its Retirement and Re-employment Act (RRA), from July 1, 2026, the statutory minimum retirement age rises from 63 to 64, and the re-employment age cap rises from 68 to 69. The goal is to reach a retirement age of 65 and a re-employment age of 70 by 2030.
Work Permit (WP): Duration Limit Removed, Maximum Employment Age Raised
Under the Ministry of Manpower's related reforms, the maximum employment duration for Work Permit holders (covering general workers, services, construction, and similar sectors) was removed from July 2025, and the maximum employment age was raised from 60 to 63, now pegged to the local retirement age and expected to move up along with it. Meanwhile, new Work Permit applicants generally need to be under 61.
S Pass (SP): No Hard Age Cap, But Higher Salary Threshold at Older Ages
There is no explicit age ceiling for the S Pass (for technical and mid-level roles), so it can theoretically be renewed continuously. However, the minimum qualifying salary increases with age: the base monthly salary is about S$3,300 from September 2025 and about S$3,600 from 2027, while applicants aged 45 and above need higher salaries, around S$4,800 and S$5,100 respectively. The older you are, the higher the salary and skill requirements, so renewal tends to become harder after 45.
Local Qualifying Salary (LQS) Raised
From July 1, 2026, Singapore also raises the Local Qualifying Salary (LQS) from S$1,600 to S$1,800 per month, the minimum monthly wage that employers must pay local staff to maintain their foreign-worker quota.
Summary
Overall, Singapore has recently and actively widened the room to employ older workers, but the practical sustainability differs a lot by pass type: WP roles involving heavy physical labor are constrained by age limits, while technical and management roles hinge on meeting salary and skill thresholds. Which occupation you take and how you plan renewals should be judged together with your pass type and the latest local policies.
